What is nail surgery?
Nail surgery is a minor surgical procedure to remove all or part of your toenail(s). It is usually required when an in-growing toenail is frequently recurring causing pain and infection. Nail surgery is recommended where conservative measures have failed.
Local anaesthetic is injected into your toe to block all pain sensation during the procedure. The offending piece(s) of nail or whole nail is then removed and a chemical is applied to prevent regrowth. After the surgery you will need to keep your foot elevated for a few hours and rest. You can return to work or school the following day.
Care has to be taken in the first few weeks after the surgery to help prevent infection with daily dressing changes and careful choice of footwear and activity. Healing time varies dependant on your age and general health, but it is generally 4 to 8 weeks.
All patients will undergo a vascular assessment and full medical history in order to ensure you are good and safe candidate for nail surgery.
Please note any patient under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. You will need to provide a weight estimate so safe maximum dosage of anaesthetic can be calculated.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Moor Podiatry prior to booking to discuss.
